Hand yoga: why your fingers will not do what you tell them
Almost every beginner plays clumsily at first. Stephen is blunt about the cause, and it is not talent.
You know the sound. You can hear the piece in your head, your fingers are in roughly the right place, and what comes out is fumbling and stumbling — the fingers seem to move together when you want them apart. It feels like a verdict on you.
Stephen puts the figure at about 100% of the students he teaches. Essentially everyone arrives playing that way. Which should tell you it is not a personal failing.
The reason is almost boringly physical: when you play the piano you use your hands in a way you never use them in daily life. Nothing else you do asks four fingers to act independently while a fifth holds still. The traditional answer is to keep playing until one day it clicks. That is not a method — it is a hope.
Why coordination fails, and the exercise that gives you independent finger control.
Fifteen exercises, and no piano required
Hand yoga is fifteen simple exercises. Not fourteen, not roughly fifteen — exactly fifteen, done one at a time. The useful part is that you do not need a piano for them. They work anywhere you happen to be sitting.
The goal is hands that know what to do without being asked. You do not think about how your hands work when you pick something up; you did once, while you were learning. This is the same process, deliberately compressed.
What it sounds like afterwards
Stephen demonstrates the before and after on the same handful of notes. Before, it is exactly what you would expect: poke, poke, poke — correct notes, no music. Then he plays the same thing again with the coordination in place, and it is smooth and continuous. Same notes. Same piano.
The same notes, poked and then played — the difference coordination makes.
The cost he puts on it: about three weeks, six to ten minutes a day. That is the whole investment, and it is the thing standing between you and every step that follows — because you cannot build anything on hands that will not cooperate.
